Warning! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Sunday, March 10, 2024)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at 2:22 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to reach 1,000 meters above the peak (2,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the south and southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 203 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on March 10, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 16 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 22-70 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 4-6 mm and durations of 25-45 seconds, and 30 volcanic tremor events with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 8-40 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 403 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Marapi in West Sumatra had the most eruptions (136 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 45 times.
