Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon, Ash Reaches Approximately 1,000 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday (15/1/2024) at 11.03 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately 1,000 meters above the peak (2,325 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 23 millimeters and a duration of 118 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismicity on January 15, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 35 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 24-86 seconds.

Then, there were 54 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 4 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and durations of 83-100 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 58 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara had the most eruptions (24 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 9 times.
