Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Eruption Height Reaches 100 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 04:11 WITA. This marks the second eruption in the past week.

According to information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column reached a height of 100 meters above the peak (1,684 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white, with low to moderate intensity, drifting towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 14.8 millimeters and a duration of 416 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA on May 7, 2024, showed 3 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14.8-37 millimeters and durations of 159-255 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 23 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-19.2 millimeters and durations of 7-14 seconds, and 9 deep volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 5.9-37 millimeters, s-p 0.8-1 seconds, and durations of 10-14 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists to refrain from any activity within a 2-kilometer radius of the eruption center and within a 3-kilometer sectoral area to the northeast and a 5-kilometer sectoral area to the east-northeast.

In 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 639 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java experienced the most eruptions (215), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 91 times.
