Ministry of Environment and Forestry: Number of Hotspots in Indonesia Reaches 239 in the Last 24 Hours (Wednesday, January 24, 2024)

Based on the forest and land fire monitoring system SiPongi of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), 24-hour monitoring shows 239 hotspots detected in Indonesia. This number is an increase of 71 hotspots compared to the previous period.

This data is the result of satellite imagery from Terra/Aqua, SNPP, and NOAA accessed on Wednesday (24/1/2024) at 08.51 WIB. Of the 239 hotspots detected, 4 have a high confidence level, 233 are medium scale, and 2 are low scale.

The hotspot confidence level is divided into 3 scales. The low scale has a range of 0-29, the medium scale 30-79, and the high scale 80-100. The higher the hotspot confidence level, the higher the likelihood of forest and land fires in a particular area.

The highest number of detected hotspots is in Bangka Belitung Islands with 47 hotspots. Bengkulu is second with 44 hotspots. South Sumatra is third with 31 hotspots.

Thirteen hotspots were detected in East Nusa Tenggara, followed by Aceh with 13 hotspots, and North Sumatra and Jambi each having 12 and 11 detected hotspots respectively.

A hotspot is a coordinate point of an area with a higher surface temperature than its surroundings, and not the number of forest and land fire incidents.

However, the large number of hotspots clustered in an area indicates the occurrence of forest and land fires. This means that hotspot data from remote sensing satellite detection is still the most effective method for monitoring forest and land fires over large areas.
