Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Today, Ash Column Reaches 300 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at 1:45 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 9 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 300 meters above the peak (1,723 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 18.2 millimeters and a duration of 136 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 21, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 5 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 23.8-33 millimeters and durations of 30-48 seconds. Furthermore, there were 86 tremor events with amplitudes of 3.1-22 millimeters and durations of 20-221 seconds.

PVMBG urges residents around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, to not enter and not carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should always be aware of the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 566 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (184 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 53 times.
