Mount Ibu Erupts Thursday Morning, Alert Level Remains at Waspada

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (11/4/2024) at 09.31 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 1,200 meters above the peak or 2,525 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate to thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 86 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on April 11, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 8 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 22-84 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 54 tremor events with amplitudes of 2-14 millimeters and durations of 15-50 seconds, and 5 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3-10 millimeters and durations of 56-254 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral extension of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 515 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (166 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 62 times.
