National Food Insecurity Rate Decreased to 4.79% in 2021

Eliminating hunger, achieving food and nutrition security, and promoting sustainable agriculture are among the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Covid-19 pandemic, which began in early 2020, negatively impacted all aspects of life. However, the government's efforts to recover the national economy yielded positive results in 2021.

One achievement was the decrease in the prevalence of moderate and severe food insecurity to 4.79% in 2021. This figure is lower than the previous year and the lowest in the last four years, as shown in the graph.

However, the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU) increased over the past three years, reaching 8.49% in 2021. This means that 8-9 out of 100 people are unable to meet their energy needs for a normal, active, and healthy life.

According to projections by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), more than 700 million people worldwide were at risk of hunger in 2021. This number is equivalent to three times the current population of Indonesia.

For several decades, the FAO has used the prevalence of undernutrition to estimate the level of hunger in the world. Thus, hunger can also be referred to as undernutrition.
