The Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) recorded a 13.4 percent average increase in investment from Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) member countries over the past five years. Despite a decline in 2013, the positive investment trend from 2012-2016 indicates a growing cooperation.
BKPM records show that IORA countries' investments are largely concentrated in the tertiary sector. The five main contributing countries for realized investment from IORA are Singapore, Malaysia, Mauritius, Australia, and Thailand. In 2016, investment from IORA countries increased by 21.6 percent to US$11.67 billion from US$9.5 billion the previous year.
IORA is the largest inter-governmental cooperation forum in the Indian Ocean, established in 1997. IORA has 21 member countries: Australia, South Africa, Bangladesh, Comoros, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mozambique, Oman, Seychelles, Singapore, Somalia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Hosting the IORA Summit 2017 in Jakarta was a strategic initiative and idea from Indonesia as the IORA Chair from 2015-2017.
