Samuel Altman is the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, the company behind the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT. Katadata reported that Altman became the first foreigner to receive an Indonesian Golden Visa, following the regulation's official launch in late August.
Altman received the Golden Visa under the "world figure" sub-category, granting him a 10-year stay. The Directorate General of Immigration of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) explained the reason for granting the Golden Visa.
“There are several categories of Golden Visas besides those based on investment/capital investment, one of which is the Golden Visa granted to figures with international reputations who can benefit Indonesia,” said the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, on his official website on Monday (4/9/2023).

Silmy believes Samuel Altman is a world figure with a mission to ensure artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity. He also gained worldwide attention after the successful launch of ChatGPT in late 2019.
Silmy recounted that Altman visited Indonesia around June to share his knowledge of artificial intelligence.
"With this Golden Visa, Altman is expected to contribute to the development and utilization of artificial intelligence in Indonesia," said Silmy.
Meanwhile, what is the current popularity of ChatGPT?
Data from Statista and Reuters, processed by Exploding Topics, shows that ChatGPT visits have been quite progressive each month. In November 2022, it reached 152.7 million visits. The following month, it increased to 266 million visits.
It only took four months for ChatGPT visits to reach 1 billion in February 2023. Although it remained consistently high, visits dropped to 1.6 billion in June 2023.
Looking at the geographical distribution, the United States is the largest contributor of users, accounting for 12.12% of total users as of July 2023. This is followed by India (7.61%) and Japan (4.17%).
Unfortunately, Indonesia is not among the top five largest users of ChatGPT.
