Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Sunday, December 29, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at 11:31 WIB (Western Indonesian Time). In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 90 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed at approximately None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations from December 29, 2024, 00:00-23:59 WIB, showed 54 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and durations of 55-155 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 pyroclastic flow quakes with amplitudes of 5-7 mm and durations of 27-75 seconds, and 3 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 40-54 seconds.

The PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river edge) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow expansion and lava flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 6,169 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,534 eruptions), while Mount Semeru erupted 2,239 times.
