Alert! Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Afternoon (Monday, March 9, 2026)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday (March 9, 2026) at 5:00 PM WIT. In the past week, Mount Ibu has erupted 6 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed is about None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

No eruption visuals were observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 17 millimeters and a duration of 43 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ibu is at Level II (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 9, 2026 from 00:00 to 23:59 WIT showed 97 eruption/earthquake events with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 33-70 seconds.

Then, 8 harmonic events with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and earthquake durations of 29-73 seconds, as well as 113 low-frequency earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-10 millimeters and earthquake durations of 17-29 seconds.

PVMBG advises residents around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a 3.5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 922 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions (473 times) while Mount Ibu has erupted 388 times.
