Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Monday, June 3, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Monday, June 3, 2024, at 6:18 AM WIB. This is the second eruption in the past week.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column was observed to reach 800 meters above the peak, or 4,476 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations from June 3, 2024, 00:00-06:00 AM WIB, showed 38 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 15-22 millimeters and durations of 80-167 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 11 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 4-10 millimeters and durations of 98-505 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 15 millimeters, an S-P time of 3.7 seconds, and a duration of 34 seconds.

The PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lava flows extending up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 878 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 358 recorded events.
