Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, February 27, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday (February 27, 2026) at 12:50 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 22 times.

Quoting eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed at around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No eruption visuals were observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 141 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on February 27, 2026 from 06:00-12:00 WIB showed 25 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 64-160 seconds.

Then, 1 avalanche earthquake with an amplitude of 7 mm and duration of 46 seconds, as well as 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 30-35 millimeters, s-p time of 13-14 seconds, and earthquake durations of 42-83 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, residents should not carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lahar flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 783 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 406 eruptions.
