Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Eruption Height Approximately 400 Meters

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 10:09 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 14 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 400 meters above the peak or 1,725 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 45 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 24, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIT showed 42 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 14-28 millimeters and durations of 31-54 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 34 emission quakes with amplitudes of 2-5 millimeters and durations of 17-43 seconds, and 7 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-28 millimeters and durations of 34-83 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral expansion towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,560 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (753 eruptions), while Mount Ibu erupted 678 times.
