Mount Semeru Erupts Again Early This Morning (Sunday, September 7, 2025)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday (7/9/2025) at 04.51 AM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 30 times.

Citing eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column observed was approximately 500 meters above the peak or 4,176 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 129 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru''s activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on September 7, 2025, from 00.00-23.59 WIB showed 48 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 65-197 seconds.

Then, there were 5 exhalation quakes with amplitudes of 4-8 millimeters and durations of 43-75 seconds, and 5 distant tectonic quakes with amplitudes of 4-12 millimeters s-p 13-24 seconds and durations of 42-98 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,989 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 2,398 times.
