Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Morning (Thursday, March 19, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (March 19, 2026) at 06.40 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 37 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column is around 700 meters above the peak or 4,376 meters above sea level.

The observed ash column is white to gray in color with thick intensity towards the north. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 170 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Earthquake observations on March 19, 2026 from 00.00-06.00 WIB showed 18 eruption/explosion earthquakes with an amplitude of 13-22 millimeters and a duration of 71-255 seconds.

Then, 6 emission earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-7 millimeters and a duration of 31-111 seconds, as well as 3 distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 3-6 millimeters, s-p time of 11-16 seconds and a duration of 30-94 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Outside that distance, residents should not carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lahar flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,085 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 586 explosions.
