Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Ash Reaches 700 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, at 7:46 AM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 7 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height was approximately 700 meters above the peak or 2,284 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 37 millimeters and a duration of 247 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on June 18, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 10.3 millimeters and a duration of 216 seconds.

Then, 1 puffing earthquake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 17 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 14 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and a sectoral 4-kilometer radius in the Northeast direction and a 5-kilometer radius in the East Northeast sector.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,177 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (516 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 210 times.
