Mount Semeru Erupted on Thursday Night, Status Alert

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (27/11/2025) at 19.47 WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 40 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column was approximately 500 meters above the peak or 4,176 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 152 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level IV (Alert). Seismicity observations on November 27, 2025, at 12.00-18.00 WIB showed 41 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 12-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 53-97 seconds.

Furthermore, 1 avalanche earthquake occurred with an amplitude of 4 mm and a duration of 38 seconds, and 1 deep volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 9 millimeters s-p 1 second and a duration of 10 seconds.

PVMBG urged not to carry out any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 20 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters from the riverbank (river boundary) along Besuk Kobokan as it has the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 7,079 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions with 2,852 times.
