Mount Ili Lewotolok Erupts Again Today, Eruption Height Reaches 400 Meters

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday (3/9/2025) at 08:31 WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 400 meters above the peak or 1,823 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 5.1 millimeters and a duration of 54 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia''s volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on September 3, 2025, at 00:00-06:00 WITA showed 32 eruption earthquakes with amplitudes of 16.2-27.1 millimeters and durations of 51-192 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 57 times of emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 1.8-11.4 millimeters and durations of 25-30 seconds, and 6 times of non-harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2-5.1 millimeters and durations of 95-209 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or conduct activities within a 3-kilometer radius from the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok''s activity, and to be aware of potential hazards from lava falls/landslides and pyroclastic flows from the Southern and Southeastern, Western, and Northeastern sectors of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,940 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,379 times) while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 253 times.
