Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts on Sunday Afternoon; Alert Level Raised

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at 12:16 WITA (West Indonesia Time). In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 64 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,300 meters above the peak (2,884 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with moderate intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 4.4 millimeters and a duration of 89 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on March 2, 2025, from 06:00 to 12:00 WITA showed 4 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 4.4-14.8 millimeters and durations of 81-263 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 4 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 2.9-7.4 millimeters and durations of 47-161 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 3.7-4.4 millimeters and durations of 232-286 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector within a distance of 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,809 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (847 times), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 135 times.
