Lewotolok Volcano Erupts on Saturday Afternoon; Alert Level Remains at Waspada

Mount Ili Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at 3:59 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Ili Lewotolok has erupted 4 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak (2,023 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption of Mount Ili Lewotolok was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Ili Lewotolok is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on March 15, 2025, from 00:00 to 23:59 WITA showed 47 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7.8-35.9 millimeters and durations of 26-94 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 136 emission quakes with amplitudes of 1.4-29.5 millimeters and durations of 22-68 seconds, and 7 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 2.6-7.2 millimeters and durations of 101-279 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ili Lewotolok, as well as visitors/climbers/tourists, not to enter or carry out activities within a 2-kilometer radius of the center of Mount Ili Lewotolok's activity, and that the residents of Lamatokan and Jontona villages should remain vigilant against the potential dangers of lava collapses/landslides from the eastern part of the peak/crater of Mount Ili Lewotolok.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,196 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (1,012 eruptions), while Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted 38 times.
