Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Reaches Approximately 400 Meters High

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Saturday, June 15, 2024, at 9:23 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 101 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 400 meters above the peak (4,076 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on June 15, 2024, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB showed 55 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 12-23 millimeters and durations of 70-154 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 3 mm and durations of 65-100 seconds, and 4 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-8 millimeters and durations of 45-70 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for hot cloud expansion and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,135 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has experienced the most eruptions, with 495 eruptions.
