Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Sunday, January 11, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Sunday (11/1/2026) at 10:25 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 52 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 2,000 meters above the peak or 5,676 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the east and southeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 27 millimeters and a duration of 696 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismicity observations on January 11, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM WIB, showed 30 eruption tremors with amplitudes of 15-22 millimeters and durations of 76-136 seconds.

Additionally, there was 1 exhalation tremor with an amplitude of 8 millimeters and a duration of 56 seconds, and 1 distant tectonic tremor with an amplitude of 8 millimeters s-p 18 seconds and a duration of 38 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the riverbanks (river borders) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for hot cloud expansion and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 165 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most with 89 occurrences.
