Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Morning (Friday, August 16, 2024)

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Friday (16/8/2024) at 09.11 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 27 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 600 meters above the peak (2,184 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with moderate intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 3.7 millimeters and a duration of 179 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on August 16, 2024, from 00.00-06.00 WITA showed 2 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5.1-10.5 millimeters and durations of 209-807 seconds.

Then, 1 puffing quake with an amplitude of 2.9 millimeters and a duration of 25 seconds, and 3 shallow volcanic quakes with amplitudes of 2.2-5.9 millimeters and durations of 9-15 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,860 volcanic eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,066 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 511 times.
