Mount Dukono Erupts Again This Morning (Sunday, December 1, 2024)

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 08.27 WIT. In the last week, Mount Dukono has erupted 8 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,200 meters above the peak (2,287 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the northwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 20 millimeters and a duration of 276.93 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dukono's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on December 1, 2024, from 00.00 to 23.59 WIT showed 86 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-34 millimeters and durations of 31.51-646.85 seconds.

Furthermore, there was 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 34 millimeters, an s-p time of 9.31 seconds, and a duration of 90.55 seconds; and 6 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 17-34 millimeters, s-p times of 19.23-57.02 seconds, and durations of 67.68-131.41 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists not to conduct activities, climb, or approach the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 3-kilometer radius.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,597 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,295 eruptions), while Mount Dukono erupted 55 times.
