Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight (Monday, February 24, 2025)

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Monday, February 24, 2025, at 7:25 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 13 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 600 meters above the peak or 1,925 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 54 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 24, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 26 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 9-28 millimeters and durations of 28-59 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 31 puffing quakes with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 23-33 seconds, and 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 5-28 millimeters and durations of 81-136 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,553 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (751 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 677 times.
