Mount Semeru Erupted on Wednesday Afternoon, Status at Alert Level

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Wednesday (February 25, 2026) at 4:00 PM WIB. In the past week, Mount Semeru has erupted 19 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the observed ash column is around None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

No eruption visuals were observed. The eruption was recorded on the seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 129 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Semeru is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on February 25, 2026 from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB showed 15 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 11-22 millimeters and durations of 79-138 seconds. Then, 2 emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 5-7 millimeters and durations of 50-66 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activities in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, within 13 kilometers of the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, residents are advised not to carry out activities within 500 meters of the riverbanks along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for being affected by expanding hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

In 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 769 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has the most eruptions with 403 events.
