Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Volcanic Ash Plume Around 700 Meters High

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Sunday (28/9/2025) at 23:56 WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 37 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column reached 700 meters above the peak (2,025 meters above sea level).

The observed ash column was white to gray with thick intensity towards the southwest. Mount Ibu's eruption was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismicity observations on September 28, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 102 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 15-28 millimeters and durations of 30-70 seconds.

Then, 2 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-6 millimeters and durations of 34-35 seconds, and 19 harmonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-20 millimeters and durations of 28-125 seconds occurred.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,425 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,522 times) while Mount Ibu erupted 2,318 times.
