Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again This Afternoon (Friday, January 9, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Friday (1/9/2026) at 3:13 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 45 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 2,000 meters above the peak (5,676 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. Mount Semeru's eruption was still ongoing when this report was made.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 9, 2026, from 06:00-12:00 WIB showed 40 eruption/explosive earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and earthquake durations of 71-159 seconds.

Subsequently, there was 1 rockfall earthquake with an amplitude of 6 mm and a duration of 47 seconds, and 2 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-5 millimeters and durations of 49-64 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond that distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan, as there is a potential for expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 138 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java has erupted the most, with 82 occurrences.
