Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again Today, Ash Reaches 1,200 Meters

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Wednesday (22/1/2025) at 3:22 PM WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 8 times.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the observed ash column height reached 1,200 meters above the peak (2,784 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the north and northeast. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on January 22, 2025, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WITA showed 14 volcanic tremors with amplitudes of 2.9-10.5 millimeters and durations of 34-249 seconds.

Then, there were 2 harmonic tremors with amplitudes of 7.4 millimeters and durations of 47-71 seconds, and 1 low-frequency earthquake with an amplitude of 29.6 millimeters and a duration of 31 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to carry out any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and in the southwest-north-northeast sector up to 6 kilometers.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 622 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (317 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 24 times.
