Mount Semeru Erupts on Thursday Night, Status Remains on Alert

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 11:41 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 37 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the visual eruption was not observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru is still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on August 15, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB, showed 81 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 13-24 millimeters and durations of 75-240 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 4 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 4-6 mm and durations of 40-55 seconds, and 10 tremor quakes with amplitudes of 3-7 millimeters and durations of 32-90 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along the Besuk Kobokan River, up to 8 kilometers from the summit (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not engage in activities within 500 meters of the riverbank along the Besuk Kobokan River due to the potential for pyroclastic flow and lava flows extending up to 13 kilometers from the summit.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 2,815 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,048 times), while Mount Semeru erupted 929 times.
