Victims of the May 1998 Tragedy Lost and Killed in Jakarta

The Joint Fact-Finding Team (TGPF) on the May 1998 Riots reported that the number of victims of the May 1998 Tragedy in and around Jakarta between May 12 and June 2, 1998, totaled 1,339. The majority were fatalities, numbering 1,217. Of these, 27 died from gunshot wounds and 1,190 died from being burned or from fire-related injuries.

The number of injured victims was 91, while the number of missing persons was 31. This data is documented by the Humanitarian Volunteer Team. For information, the riots in Jakarta generally occurred in four stages. The first stage was a preparatory phase involving activities designed to provoke a reaction, such as burning certain materials. This stage also included inter-group/student fights that fueled hatred.

The second stage involved destruction, such as stone-throwing and the demolition of public facilities. The third stage was looting by the public. The final stage was arson, the culmination of the riots, resulting in a greater number of casualties and losses.
