Mount Marapi Erupts Again This Evening (Friday, November 15, 2024)

Mount Marapi in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday, November 15, 2024, at 3:19 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Marapi had only erupted once.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak (None meters above sea level).

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 30.2 millimeters and a duration of 43 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Marapi is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on November 15, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIB showed 1 volcanic tremor event with an amplitude of 1.8 millimeters and a duration of 38 seconds.

Then, 1 tornillo earthquake with an amplitude of 1.7 millimeters and a duration of 9 seconds, and 1 local tectonic earthquake with an amplitude of 1.7 millimeters, S-P 7 seconds, and a duration of 22 seconds.

PVMBG urges the community around Mount Marapi and climbers/visitors/tourists not to enter and not to carry out activities within a 4.5-kilometer radius of the eruption center (Verbeek Crater) of Mount Marapi.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,137 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,062 eruptions), while Mount Marapi erupted 253 times.
