Mount Ibu Erupts Again This Morning, Eruption Height 800 Meters from the Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Thursday (October 16, 2025) at 05:08 AM Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT). In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 20 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be around 800 meters above the peak or 2,125 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to grey with thick intensity towards the northeast. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 88.87 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on October 16, 2025, from 00:00-23:59 WIT showed 56 eruption tremors/earthquakes with amplitudes of 16-28 millimeters and durations of 31-73 seconds.

Additionally, there were 2 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 2-6 mm and durations of 32-34 seconds, and 13 exhalation earthquakes with amplitudes of 4-10 millimeters and durations of 35-42 seconds.

PVMBG urges the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 2.0-kilometer radius and a sectoral expansion of 3.5 kilometers towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

Throughout 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 6,671 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (2,623 times), while Mount Ibu erupted 2,392 times.
