Warning! This Morning Mount Semeru Erupts Again (Thursday, January 15, 2026)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Thursday (15/1/2026) at 10:37 AM Western Indonesian Time. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 26 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to be approximately None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The visual eruption was not observed. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters and a duration of 110 seconds.

According to MAGMA Indonesia's volcano activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on January 15, 2026, at 00:00-06:00 WIB showed 36 eruption/explosion earthquakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 53-133 seconds.

Additionally, there were 7 rockfall earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-10 mm and durations of 37-91 seconds, and 2 gas emission earthquakes with amplitudes of 3-6 millimeters and durations of 35-52 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, as far as 13 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Beyond this distance, people should not engage in activities within 500 meters from the river bank (river border) along Besuk Kobokan as it has the potential to be affected by the expansion of hot clouds and lava flows up to 17 kilometers from the peak.

Throughout 2026, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 205 volcanic eruptions across Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions, with 115 occurrences.
