Mount Ibu Erupts Again Tonight, Ash Reaches 500 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Ibu in North Maluku erupted again on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 6:16 PM WIT. In the last week, Mount Ibu has erupted 78 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach 500 meters above the peak (1,825 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the southwest and west. The eruption was recorded on a seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 28 millimeters and a duration of 74 seconds.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Ibu's activity level is at Level III (Alert). Observations of seismic activity on November 23, 2024, from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM WIT showed 25 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 7-28 millimeters and durations of 35-74 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 4 rockfall quakes with amplitudes of 2-3 mm and durations of 27-38 seconds, and 56 emission quakes with amplitudes of 3-5 millimeters and durations of 29-56 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Ibu and visitors/tourists not to engage in activities within a 4-kilometer radius and a 5-kilometer sectoral extension towards the crater opening in the northern part of Mount Ibu's active crater.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 5,344 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku has had the most eruptions, with 2,173 eruptions.
