Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Erupts Again This Afternoon, Eruption Height Reaches 800 Meters Above the Peak

Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Nusa Tenggara erupted again on Sunday (25/8/2024) at 11:42 WITA. In the last week, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki has erupted 24 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed to be approximately 800 meters above the peak (2,384 meters above sea level).

The ash column was observed to be gray with thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, the activity level of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki is at Level III (Alert). Seismic observations on August 25, 2024, from 00:00 to 06:00 WITA showed 1 eruption earthquake with an amplitude of 7.4 millimeters and a duration of 156 seconds.

Then, 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes with amplitudes of 4.4-8.8 millimeters and durations of 8-10 seconds, and 2 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 3.7-4.4 millimeters (S-P not observed) and durations of 169-256 seconds.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and visitors/tourists not to conduct any activities within a 3-kilometer radius of the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki and Mount Lewotobi Perempuan, and 4 kilometers in the North-Northeast sector, and 5 kilometers in the Northeast sector from the eruption center of Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 3,045 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (1,157 eruptions), while Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted 546 times.
