Warning! Mount Semeru Erupts Again Tonight (Saturday, December 7, 2024)

Mount Semeru in East Java erupted again on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 7:33 PM WIB. In the last week, Mount Semeru has erupted 91 times.

Based on eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the height of the ash column was observed to reach None meters above the peak or None meters above sea level.

The eruption was not visually observed. The eruption of Mount Semeru was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcanic activity report, Mount Semeru's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations on December 7, 2024, from 00:00 to 23:59 WIB showed 86 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 10-22 millimeters and durations of 62-150 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 2 pyroclastic flow quakes with amplitudes of 2-3 mm and durations of 55-90 seconds, and 18 emission quakes with amplitudes of 5-8 millimeters and durations of 40-84 seconds.

PVMBG advises against any activity in the southeast sector along Besuk Kobokan, up to 8 kilometers from the peak (eruption center). Outside this distance, the public should not conduct activities within 500 meters of the riverbank (river buffer zone) along Besuk Kobokan due to the potential for pyroclastic flow expansion and lava flows up to 13 kilometers from the peak.

During 2024, MAGMA Indonesia recorded 5,780 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Ibu in North Maluku had the most eruptions (2,386 eruptions), while Mount Semeru erupted 2,026 times.
