Dukono Volcano Erupts on Tuesday Afternoon; Alert Level Remains at Waspada

Mount Dukono in North Maluku erupted again on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, at 2:20 PM WIT (West Indonesia Time). This is the second eruption in the last week.

According to eruption information from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) via the MAGMA Indonesia application, the ash column height was observed at approximately 1,100 meters above the peak, or 2,187 meters above sea level.

The ash column was observed to be white to gray in color, with moderate to thick intensity towards the west and northwest. The eruption of Mount Dukono was still ongoing at the time of this report.

According to the MAGMA Indonesia volcano activity report, Mount Dukono's activity level is at Level II (Alert). Seismic observations from March 4, 2025, 00:00-23:59 WIT, showed 210 eruption quakes with amplitudes of 5-33 millimeters and durations of 36.59-55.36 seconds.

Furthermore, there were 5 distant tectonic earthquakes with amplitudes of 7-34 millimeters, S-P intervals of 15.75-18.04 seconds, and durations of 65.15-95.63 seconds, as well as 1 continuous tremor with an amplitude of 2-4 millimeters, predominantly 3 millimeters.

PVMBG advises the public around Mount Dukono and visitors/tourists to refrain from activities, climbing, and approaching the Malupang Warirang Crater within a 4-kilometer radius.

During 2025, MAGMA Indonesia has recorded 1,858 volcanic eruptions/eruptions throughout Indonesia. Mount Semeru in East Java had the most eruptions (870 times), while Mount Dukono erupted 18 times.
