Japan's COVID-19 Cases are 100% Omicron Variant, Surpassing South Africa

A report by *Our World in Data* shows that the proportion of the Omicron variant in Japan reached 100% by January 21, 2022. This proportion is the highest compared to other countries in the world.

The Omicron variant was also widely found in South Africa, reaching 99.44% of total Covid-19 cases and becoming the second highest in the world. Furthermore, the Omicron variant in Botswana and the United Kingdom reached 99.26% and 99.15%, respectively.

Meanwhile, Indonesia ranks 22nd in the world with an Omicron variant proportion of 86.54% of total Covid-19 cases. Sweden is below Indonesia with a proportion of 78.48%.

The Omicron variant was initially detected in South Africa and then spread to neighboring countries. Confirmed Omicron cases have now been found in countries on other continents, including in Asia.

The World Health Organization (WHO) stated that the highly mutated Omicron variant of the coronavirus is likely to spread internationally and poses a very high risk of a surge in infections.
