The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is perceived as the party most trusted by respondents to champion the global free trade agenda in 2026.
This is stated in the The State of Southeast Asia 2026 Survey Report released by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in April this year.
"Indonesia (41.5%), Timor-Leste (38.8%), and Vietnam (37.5%) have the strongest belief in this regard," explained the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in its report.
Meanwhile, the respondents' trust in China to champion the global free trade agenda, at 21.3%, is higher than that in the European Union and the United States (US).
The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute explained that the weakening of trust in the US, from 19% in 2025 to 14.8% this year, was triggered by the US's decision to impose fluctuating tariffs over the past year.
"The weakening of trust in the US as a champion of global free trade is not surprising," said the researcher.
Here are the percentages of countries/regional organizations that respondents most trust to champion the global free trade agenda in 2026:
- ASEAN: 25.5%
- China: 21.3%
- European Union: 19.2%
- US: 14.8%
- Japan: 10.4%
- Australia: 2.4%
- India: 2.3%
- United Kingdom: 1.5%
- New Zealand: 1.4%
- South Korea: 1.3%
The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute conducted this survey online from January 5 to February 20, 2026 using a mixed purposive sampling method.
The respondents numbered 2,008 people spread across 11 Southeast Asian countries, with a minimum age criterion of 18 years.
The respondents came from five affiliation categories: (a) academics, members of think tanks, or researchers; (b) representatives of the private sector; (c) representatives of civil society, NGOs, or the media; (d) government officials; and (e) staff of regional or international organizations.
