This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 18 countries recorded an increase in deaths, and three other countries recorded deaths, but in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Belize, Peru, El Salvador, and Uruguay. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, January 27, 2022, amounted to 1,198, with a weekly growth exceeding 107.55 percent.
Honduras recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 300 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 32 deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported eight deaths.
Next is Belize, which recorded 175 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 11, higher than the four deaths recorded the previous week. Deaths in Peru increased by 125.44%, El Salvador by 26 deaths (up 116.67%), and Uruguay by 110 deaths (up 107.55%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 15,998 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 25.91% compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil reported 2,580 deaths (up 71.09%), Mexico 1,987 deaths (up 63.54%), Colombia 1,582 deaths (up 74.23%), and Argentina 1,391 deaths (up 45.2%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 26,826. This accounts for 45.1 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 59,484. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 19,445 deaths.
