The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) passed the Law on Mother and Child Welfare (UU KIA) for the First Thousand Days of Life on Tuesday (June 4, 2024).
This law stipulates, among other things, that employees can receive maternity leave for a maximum duration of 6 months.
Previously, Law Number 13 of 2003 concerning Manpower stipulated that the maximum duration of maternity leave was 3 months; 1.5 months before childbirth and 1.5 months after childbirth.
The UU KIA extends this leave to a maximum of 6 months, with a minimum of 3 months, and an additional maximum of 3 months if there are special conditions supported by a doctor's certificate.
The UU KIA also stipulates that employees taking maternity leave cannot be dismissed from their jobs, are entitled to full wages for the first four months of leave, and 75% of their wages for the fifth and sixth months.
"This bill is intended to address the issues of mothers and children during the first thousand days of life, in preparation for Indonesia's Golden Age in 2045," said the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), I Gusti Ayu Bintang Darmawati, as reported by Antara on Tuesday (June 4, 2024).
Deputy Chairperson of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Abdul Wachid, stated that after the enactment of this law, the government must immediately prepare subordinate regulations and synchronize them with companies regarding the implementation of leave provisions.
