This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 19 countries recorded an increase in deaths, and three other countries recorded deaths, but in smaller numbers.
Percentage-wise, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Ecuador, Uruguay, Bermuda, Costa Rica, and Paraguay. The total deaths in these five countries as of Monday, January 31, 2022, amounted to 613, with a weekly growth exceeding 86.58 percent.
Ecuador recorded the highest increase in deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 111.67 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 127 deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported 60 deaths.
Uruguay follows with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 104.62 percent. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 133, compared to 65 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, other countries include Bermuda with four deaths (up 100%), Costa Rica with 71 deaths (up 97.22%), and Paraguay with 278 deaths (up 86.58%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 15,987 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 22.16% compared to the previous week. Following the United States, the highest death tolls were recorded in Brazil with 3,664 deaths (up 79.08%), Mexico with 2,519 deaths (up 43.86%), Colombia with 1,809 deaths (up 45.42%), and Argentina with 1,733 deaths (up 53.63%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 29,056. This accounts for 46.19 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 62,900. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 22,019 deaths.
