The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.28 million cases by Tuesday, December 27, 2022. Spain recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 11.55 percent. GISAID recorded 87,864 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 0.19 percent compared to the previous day.
Next is the Dominican Republic, which recorded an 8.08 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily Omicron cases in the country increased by 8.08 percent compared to the previous day.
Furthermore, Omicron cases in Malaysia increased by 2.97 percent to 25,522 cases compared to the previous week; in Japan, Omicron cases increased by 2.76 percent to 310,080 cases compared to the previous week; and in Italy, there were 69,267 new Omicron cases (a 2.67% increase).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 31,383, a 0.24 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
