America's Tourism Sector Contributed the Most in the World in 2020

In a World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) report, the tourism sector's contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the United States reached US$ 1.103,7 billion in 2020. This figure represents a 41% decrease from the previous year. Nevertheless, the tourism sector's contribution to the US GDP remained the highest globally.

China followed with a tourism sector contribution to GDP reaching US$ 667.2 billion. Japan and Germany trailed behind, with tourism sector contributions to GDP of US$ 234.9 billion and US$ 208.8 billion respectively.

It is noteworthy that the tourism sector's contribution to global GDP contracted by 3.7% due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Consequently, many people lost their jobs in this sector. Only 272 million jobs were available throughout 2020, a decrease of 18.5% compared to the previous year.
