The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 6.55 million cases by Friday, January 6, 2023. According to GISAID data, Uruguay recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 151 new cases. The total number of Omicron cases in Uruguay currently represents 0 percent of the global total.
China (PRC) follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in the country increased by 77.02 percent, with 1,556 new cases reported. The daily increase in Omicron cases shows a 4.22 percent rise compared to the previous day's 1,493 cases.
Next is Venezuela with 394 additional Omicron cases (up 37.28%), Ukraine with 982 additional Omicron cases (up 9.72%), and Iran (Islamic Republic) with a 9.04 percent increase in Omicron cases, reaching 1,870 compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases has reached 31,900, a 0.42 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
