This week's COVID-19 statistics in Africa show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. This week, 10 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while 19 others reported deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Namibia, and Eritrea. The total deaths in these five countries as of Monday, December 13, 2021, amounted to 56, with a weekly growth exceeding 100 percent.
Uganda recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Africa, with weekly growth reaching 550 percent. Worldometer recorded 13 deaths in the country, an increase from the 2 deaths reported the previous week.
Kenya follows with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 450 percent. The country reported 11 deaths, compared to 2 the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Zimbabwe with 26 deaths (up 420%), Namibia with 4 deaths (up 300%), and Eritrea with 2 deaths (up 100%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in Egypt with 333 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by -12.37% compared to the previous week. Following Egypt, South Africa recorded 151 deaths (down -10.65%), Sudan recorded 44 deaths (down -12%), Algeria recorded 41 deaths (down -8.89%), and Ethiopia recorded 35 deaths (down -41.67%).
Total deaths in Africa over the past seven days amounted to 779. This accounts for 1.58 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, which totaled 49,316. The number of deaths in Africa decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 858 deaths.
