This week's COVID-19 statistics in Africa show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Nine countries reported increased deaths this week, while 28 others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Tunisia, Guinea-Bissau, Niger, Seychelles, and Guinea. The total deaths in these five countries as of Friday, February 4, 2022, were 391, representing a weekly growth of over 66.67%.
Tunisia recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Africa, with weekly growth reaching 102.22%. Worldometer recorded 364 deaths in the country, a 36.84% increase from the previous day.
Guinea-Bissau follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in this country grew by 100%. Two deaths were reported, compared to one the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Niger with four deaths (up 100%), Seychelles with 11 deaths (up 83.33%), and Guinea with an increase of 66.67%.
Looking at the total number of reported deaths, South Africa recorded the highest number of deaths in the past seven days in Africa, with 894 deaths. This represents an 11.06% increase compared to the previous week. Following South Africa are Tunisia with 364 deaths (up 102.22%), Egypt with 284 deaths (up 20.34%), Morocco with 245 deaths (up 9.87%), and Algeria with 79 deaths (down 8.14%).
The total number of deaths in Africa over the past seven days was 2,330. This accounts for 3.33% of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 70,044. The number of deaths in Africa increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 2,257 deaths.
