This week's Covid-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Eleven countries recorded increased deaths this week, while three others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Argentina, Honduras, Trinidad and Tobago, Guatemala, and Colombia. A total of 125 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Thursday, December 22, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 65.62 percent.
Argentina ranks first, with a 457.14 percent weekly increase in deaths. Worldometer recorded 39 deaths in the country, up from seven the previous week.
Honduras follows, recording over 200 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 50% increase in deaths compared to the previous day. Trinidad and Tobago recorded six deaths (a 100% increase), Guatemala saw an 80% increase in deaths, and Colombia a 65.62% increase.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas occurred in the United States, with 2,022 deaths. This represents a 7.15% increase compared to the previous week. Brazil follows with 972 deaths (a 21.5% increase), Canada with 209 deaths (a 5.43% decrease), Peru with 203 deaths (a 47.1% increase), and Chile with 160 deaths (an 8.11% increase).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days is 3,819. This accounts for 38.09 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, totaling 10,025. The death toll in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,398 deaths.
